Volunteer Hedgehog Survey 2021 - 22

Volunteers are invited to take part in a national hedgehog survey. This survey will be conducted from May to September 2021 and 2022.

The methodology follows that developed by the Mammal Society of the UK which uses footprint tunnels to examine hedgehog occupancy in various habitats. Volunteers place 10 footprint tunnels within a 1km2 area for 5 nights and check them each morning for signs of hedgehogs.

Workshops will be offered in early summer 2021 for interested persons learn more about the survey and to provide volunteers with instructions and equipment needed, Workshops will be delivered in the following areas supported by the local Council Heritage and Biodiversity Officers: Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Kilkenny, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown, Dublin City. A workshop in Cork will be facilitated by Cork Environmental Network. A workshop will be facilitated by the Ulster Wildlife Trust in Northern Ireland. Full details of dates and locations will be provided in spring 2021. It is hoped that these workshops will be delivered in person but alternative arrangements may have to be implemented if COVID 19 restrictions remain in place.

This survey would be suitable for interested individuals, local wildlife or conservation groups and community and youth groups. Participants are welcome from all over Ireland. Please contact us here if you would like more information or wish to be informed of training and survey news.
